The Nature of Photographs | Shore, Phaidon,  2007

Available online through Amazon or
at the Westchester Community College Bookstore

Required Materials & Supplies:

  • 1 DSLR camera (at least 10-12 megapixels) with manual operations is required for the class. Canon and Nikon are very reputable camera brands to keep in mind as you look for a camera to purchase or borrow from a friend/family member. The differences between Canon vs. Nikon cameras is comparable to the differences between Chevy vs. Ford vehicles – it mostly comes down to personal preference. Your camera must be able to shoot RAW.   If you are still uncertain about what to purchase and want to talk to a knowledgeable salesperson I suggest going to B&H (in the city). Ask a lot of questions; pick up the camera and see how it feels in your hands.
  • Your Camera’s Instruction Manual
  • A tripod large enough to be rock solid with your particular camera and lens
(a less beefy tripod can be made much more sturdy with sandbags/weights, or even a backpack hung from it!)
  • At least 2 Digital Storage Media Cards for your camera :: at least 4 gigabytes
  • 1 Jump Drive (at least 4 GB of memory) for transferring your print files to a print station
  • OPTIONAL: External Hard Drive – 250GB or greater (get in the practice of backing up all of your digital files)
  • Card reader for downloading images to your computer specific to the card used in camera
  • Paper for printing assignments and final project must be purchased through CFA  if printing on Epson printers in Lab – I will give a handout about this is class
  • 3 ring binder (for your Notebook)
  • A folder specifically for handing in projects
(any basic 8.5”x11” folder will do: NO file folders)
  • Avery Ready Index Table of Contents Dividers, Multi-Color Tabs, 1-15 Tab
  • 8.5 X 11 plastic sleeves for storage and presentation of assignments
  • Staples Presentation Book, White or Black, 12 page
  • a box of Alcohol Wipes

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT — You will need access to a computer (and a printer) for some projects, including the Final Project.  If you are unsure about this, come talk to me anytime.
